STAFF and users of Worcestershire Library and History Centre are celebrating a successful first year this week.

The Trinity Street centre has been praised by Worcestershire County Council after it attracted more than 28,000 people over the year.

Sixty people took part in the centre's Journey into History workshops, in conjunction with the BBC, with all participants being entered into the first anniversary prize draw.

The winner, Celia Steele, was presented with a copy of Simon Schama's A History of Britain Volume Two on Tuesday.

Another 20 runners-up received a History of Britain CD-Rom courtesy of the BBC.

"The Worcestershire Library and History Centre has exceeded our expectations for its first year, and we're thrilled that so many people are benefiting from the facilities," said Coun Stephen Clee, the council's Cabinet assistant for culture and community.

"Its success is a credit to the staff whose hard work and bright ideas have created a very valuable resource for the whole of Worcestershire."
