PUPILS, sports clubs and teachers alike had cause to celebrate when Hanley Castle High School's new £650,000 sports hall was officially opened on Thursday (May 30).
"We're absolutely delighted," said headteacher Alan Johnston. "It's a lovely building - a Rolls-Royce of sports halls.
"We had some very difficult negotiations that went wrong for one reason or another and we've come through it all."
Mr Johnston said the new facilities would greatly enhance sport at the school, providing an opportunity for multiple games to take place simultaneously. The hall has facilities for many different activities, including badminton, five-a-side football and even archery.
"The PE department is revelling in having all this lovely equipment and space," said Mr Johnston.
He paid tribute to the work of several school governors and Powyke county councillor Tom Wells in obtaining funding for the project.
Worcestershire County Council stumped up £500,000, with the remaining £150,000 coming from Malvern Hills District Council's Malvern Millions.
Architect Patrick Travis and Worcestershire County Council cabinet member for local education Jane Longmuir also attended Thursday's official opening.
The sport hall is also open to local sports clubs on a term-by-term basis. More information is available from Pat Davies, at the school, on 01684 593241.
