MALVERN'S QinetiQ is to expand into the oil industry after forging a strategic alliance with a Texas-based company to develop fibre-optic sensors and systems.
QinetiQ's proven expertise developing fibre-optic acoustic sensor technology will combine with Input/Output Inc's experience in developing seismic systems.
"The commercialisation of technologies into the oil and gas market from Qine-tiQ's MoD research and development programme is a key element of our strategy," said Michael Gill, fibre optic group manager for QinetiQ.
He described fibre optic sensors as the "next generation of technology in this field" adding the joint work will help make "a significant step forward".
"Our joint objective is to bring distinct benefits in terms of cost and reliability; particularly in the harshest deep water and in-well environments," he said.
