A PENSIONER is awaiting a flood of orders after her unique product was featured on a popular TV programme.
Inge Beaumont's company makes a product called SlugX - a slug trap that uses beer to lure slugs and snails to an alcoholic death.
Presenter Alan Titchmarsh chose to demonstrate the product on his Gardeners' World programme on BBC2 on Friday, saying "I've tried all sorts, but I thought I'd give this flashy slug beer trap a chance."
Following the airing, the small company, which operates from an office in Mrs Beaumont's Kidderminster garden, is expecting "an onslaught of enquiries".
"We know how valuable an Alan Titchmarsh endorsement is," said Mrs Beaumont, who is in her 70s and designed the slug trap herself.
"Last week after Chelsea, garden centres sold out of plants that he said he liked. We've seen what Delia can do for cranberries and we are now preparing ourselves for an onslaught of inquiries!"
The eco-friendly SlugX trap is unique, as it can be used successfully on any flat surface such as patios and decking.
The trap uses low-cost beer to lure slugs and snails to death by alcohol, and has prompted enormous interest because of the ingenuity of its design, including being featured in the Daily Telegraph.
It is possible to catch vast numbers of slugs and snails without threatening other wildlife, such as hedgehogs, frogs and beneficial beetles.
"Our customers are delighted with SlugX because it does not need to be sunk into the ground," said Mrs Beaumont.
"Slugs and snails have always been a pest on patios and decking, but now their days are numbered.
"We believe we have the product that gardeners have been crying out for. It has cleared our garden of armies of slugs and we have had hundreds of letters from grateful customers who are thrilled to be slug-free.
"Many gardeners are catching up to 50 or 60 slugs and snails in a weekend, and one garden writer claimed to have caught 142 in one night."
Mrs Beaumont set up her company, Westfield Products, due to her own gardening frustrations and with her small team now exports SlugX to 18 countries around the world.
The company has even dispatched a large order of the traps to Saudi Arabia - using non-alcoholic beer!
"We spent a fortnight testing out all the alcohol-free beers in our own garden to find the one that worked the best!"
