MALVERN gained maximum points from this good-spirited WCL Division Two game at Regency Road, winning by 69 runs.
Due to showers the game was reduced to 36 overs. Lye asked Malvern to bat first under the damp conditions and Ali quickly dismissed Walwyn and Postans.
At 16-2 Ian Dovey joined Dave Cox. They produced a 90 run partnership that was the backbone of Malvern's innings. Dovey in his first game back played well for 31 and Cox (56) timed his shots for his second 50 of the season. Chris Prosser then joined Cox and showed immediate confidence. Besgrove joined Prosser at the end for a mad dash for runs. Malvern ended with an excellent 176 runs with Prosser not out on 40.
Lye did not start well, losing both openers cheaply to M Cox and Mudway. These two bowled particularly well restricting the runs. Combined with good fielding, Lye lost regular wickets and were always behind the rate. Ian Sumner produced an excellent spell that removed any chance of Lye winning. He had figures of 5-32 off nine overs. Only Martin Borley looked in control, scoring 51.
With overs running out Besgrove brought on Johnny Dovey who was to return excellent figures of 5-2-6-2. He bowled Borley in the penultimate over to achieve the victory for Malvern in an exciting a match sponsored by Francis of Malvern.
An excellent weekend for Malvern 2nds claiming 44 points from a possible 48.
