PEOPLE living in Stourport-on-Severn could soon be safe from flooding, thanks to a £425,000 Severn Trent project to tackle the problem.
Three homes in Lichfield Street, one in Mart Lane and another in Severn Side have all been flooded in the past, along with gardens and the footpath running alongside the river.
Yesterday, Severn Trent started installing 600ft of new pipe and replacing a 360ft stretch with larger pipe to ease the water flow.
Larger pipe will also be installed beneath Lichfield Street while new pipe will be put in to connect the sewer system to a tank beneath Carpets of Worth car park, off Severn Road.
"Heavy storms are becoming more frequent, which can mean an increase in flooding," said Larry Barnes, Severn Trent Water's network field services manager.
"This scheme will help reduce the problems of overflowing sewers which have caused flooding to homes and gardens."
The work should be completed by the end of October, Mr Barnes said.
Lichfield Street will be closed from Monday, August 12 for up to 11 weeks while the work is carried out.
