REGARDING your article headlined "Yes Minister" (Evening News, May 20) I hate reading of references to the Jack Profumo Affair, which occurred so many years ago.
He was a Lt Col during the Second World War. While in Tunisia, I worked closely with him for a few months. Though in the Royal Artillery, I spent my whole war attached to an RAF Squadron, plotting aerial photographs, some specials, called Merton Grids, which were for him.
They were for shoots over long distance, whereby Spitfire pilots relayed where shells had landed. I did the work, mainly at night, by hurricane lamp, on very poor maps.
Sometimes it took hours, but Jack Profumo had all the patience in the world waiting for me through the night until I had completed my task.
He was a very fine officer and a real gentleman. I hope, in the future, people will forget about the episode.
