CHURCH leaders have backed the Bishop of Dudley's condemnation of the government's proposals for an asylum centre in Throckmorton.
The Worcestershire diocesan synod, meeting at Hartlebury Castle, warned of the wisdom of placing such a centre in a remote rural site.
It seemed to place a greater weight on security issues rather than on providing a safe and welcoming environment, members said.
Speaking after the meeting, the Bishop of Worcester, the Rt Revd Dr Peter Selby, said: "I was keenly encouraged to find that the synod, wanted to extend hospitality, but at the same time it had serious questions about the way in which the proposed Throckmorton Centre will affect those who will be accommodated there. We have the view and support of all the refugee organisations."
