A BIRD trapped in its nest had both the RSPCA and the fire brigade racing to free it.
The month-old raven was spotted by visitors with twine wrapped round its leg, dangling from its nest 60ft up in the east tower of ruined stately home Wit-ley Court near Stourport.
The RSPCA was first on the scene and called out a Stourport fire crew last Wednesday evening.
But the firefighters' ladder was not long enough to reach it and girders bracing the tower prevented fire crews from rescuing the stricken creature by crane. They finally cut it free with a knife atta-ched to a pole.
"The bird flew for a little bit but it was its maiden flight and it dropped," explained custodian Lin Breakwell.
The raven was taken away for treatment by the RSPCA. It may have to have its twine-damaged leg amputated, but is likely to survive and could be taken back to Witley Court.
