June 14 1902

A VERY large congregation assembled at All Saints' Church, Evesham, at a quarter to twelve on Sunday morning in response to a public invitation to attend a service of thanksgiving for the termination of The Boer War. The Mayor and Corporation were among those who attended, and a collection was taken towards a memorial in the church for those who died for their country during the conflict.

June 18 1927

WALTER George Dyson, a blacksmith of Laverton Meadow, Broadway, was summoned for being drunk in charge of a motor-cycle combination at Evesham on June 9. Mr J Wythen Roberts appeared for defendant and pleaded guilty. PC Ainge said that at 7.30pm he saw defendant in Burford Road trying to start the contraption, but was drunk and almost fell off his machine. Defendant had been in Fladbury looking for work and had enjoyed some home-made wine with gardeners, but was sober until he reached the garage at Bengeworth, which is where he was spotted. He was fined £2.

June 14 1952

THE Vale of Evesham NFU branch, alarmed about the damage caused to crops by wild pigeons, decided last Friday to urge union headquarters to organise a national pigeon shooting week. Mr Gordon Grove, who moved the resolution, said the pigeons ate plum blossom as well as sprouts, cauliflower, grain and other crops. He added: "If we can organise a pigeon week and get every farmer and grower with a gun to take part, we can really have a go at pigeons throughout the country."

June 16 1977

THE highest June flood since 1924 has brought chaos to boating on the Avon, with one boat sinking at Pershore and others abandoned as the river rose to a peak of six foot and four inches above normal summer level. Mr N L Grundy, of the Severn Trent Water Authority, warned boat users to abandon their boats and return home until the floods had subsided.
