VISITORS from 27 clubs from across the Midlands joined with home representatives to compete for the Open Mixed Four-somes Trophy at Broadway.
This net medal competition, played off half combined handicaps, was won by the visiting duo of Malcolm and Sheila Lloyd from Minchinhampton with a score of 71.5.
Second, and representing Broad-way, were Arthur Gray and Denise Parker (72.5) who won on countback from Peter Stone (Cirencester) and Valerie Sprott (Minchinhampton).
This pairing produced a remarkable score on the day despite having to tee off last in the truly atrocious weather.
Fourth prize went to Michael Alexiou and Julia Ward (73.5) also from Broadway.
The prize for best gross was won by Broadway's currently in-form husband and wife duo of Mike and Lin Everitt with a gross 83.
At the presentation dinner that followed, Broadway's captain, Richard Rouse, was able to announce that the trophy had this year been re-named the John Freeman Open Mixed Foursomes Trophy in honour and recognition of the magnificent 38-year contribution made by John Freeman, 28 years a professional and latterly as Assistant Professional working alongside his son, Martyn, who has now assumed the role as head professional.
For his part, John was delighted to be on hand to present the trophy to the winners since, as he pointed out in his speech, such honours were more often conferred posthumously!
