THE CCA Jubilee shindig was blessed with a wonderful warm sunny day. The gymkhana organised and run by Mary Weaver and helpers was well attended with some 14 entries and was thoroughly enjoyed by riders and spectators alike. Winners of the gymkhana were: Seniors - 1 Josie Wilkes, 2 Rosie Stephenson. Juniors - 1 Katie Fisher, 2 Katie Brooks. Other children had great fun with football competitions, flat races and bike races. John Thorley, director of the National Sheep Association, came along in his vintage open Austin motor car and took enthusiastic children for rides around the common tracks.
The dog show drew a good entry with a mixture of handsome, cute, small, large, quiet and excited animals and judge, Richard Smith, Malvern Hills Conservators shepherd, had his work cut out choosing winners of the various categories. The winner of the Geoff Leake Memorial Trophy was Miss Handy.
Evening arrived and a lovely roasted pig with crisp crackling, stuffing and apple sauce was a mouth-watering sight and soon attracted hungry customers. The bar was kept busy slaking thirsts on this warm June evening. Med Snookes and friends serenaded the throng and the celebrations continued long after the sun had slipped down behind the hills.
The CCA committee would like to thank all those who helped with the gymkhana, the races and dog show and those who worked in the evening on the barbecue and bar and entertainment, those who sold raffle tickets and the public who came along and joined in the celebrations. Thanks to all who donated raffle prizes etc, to Mary Weaver for the gymkhana cups, Millers Tyres for sponsoring the football and Dinkie Drinkwater who provided the comfort stations and a special thanks to the police who stood by for protection of the Common.
At the "wash-up" meeting the overall profit arrived at was a gratifying £556. This, added to profits made at a couple of other events run by the CCA, means that the association can donate £1,000 to the fund for restoration of St Gregory's church bells.
