A MALVERN resident has expressed concern that a lull in refuse collections in the town over the Golden Jubilee holiday weekend created an unwelcome health hazard.

Dr Penelope Carson, of College Road, has written to Malvern Hills District Council after becoming upset that her rubbish was left uncollected for nearly two weeks.

She said: "I believe that it is unacceptable not to collect household waste each week whatever public holidays might be granted. Other essential services have to carry on. It's a health hazard to have stinking rubbish hanging around in the summer and it attracts the far too numerous foxes we have in the Malvern area."

Alexander Bill, the council's head of contract services, said that rubbish collections were done on a rotation basis when bank holidays interrupted normal routine.

He said that on June 5 it was College Road's turn to miss out on its usual collection and, as a result, a double collection took place on Wednesday, June 12.

He said: "It was been advertised on refuse sacks for at least two weeks and put in the Malvern Gazette and other media over that time. People can either keep their rubbish or take it to the civic amenity site at Newland, although we are not asking people to do that."
