Your editorial (Your Letters, May 24) in favour of an M5 link road to Malvern betrays some loose thought.
Firstly a heavy-duty straight road is only appropriate when large volumes of bulk goods are involved, servicing heavy industry, regional shopping centres or several hypermarkets etc, not Malvern's light industry and the know-how factory at QinetiQ. Bulk 16-wheel transporters are not needed for our shops and small-scale factories and it hardly needs stating that the rather small number of key people people involved in hi-tech research readily beat an A or B-road path to the door of a centre where a better a mousetrap (or more likely these days, software) is invented. Indeed the salubrious location of Malvern free of dual carriageway scars across the landscape is a great asset in attracting high calibre scientists to conferences here.
Secondly, on your unsupported assertion that "nothing could take way the the beauty of the hills or the spa heritage", aren't you grateful to GBS and others who stopped the quarrying of the hills? Have you not spotted the creeping urbanisation of the view from the hills? Why don't you go the whole hog and re-invent Malvern as the Milton Keynes of Worcestershire or as a milestone on the route to Hereford, eventually with a dual carriageway tunnel to iron out the inconvenient obstacle of the hills?
Thirdly I'm not sure I want people to "get here by accident" which you apparently advocate.
I'd rather they continued to come deliberately, to enjoy our excellent theatres and scenery.
Brian Roberts (Prof), North End Lane, Malvern.
