HEREFORD cider-making company Bulmers is hoping its award-winning Scrumpy Jack will hit the spot with England's cricketers.

Scrumpy Jack is the official pint of the England cricket team and the Plough Lane company has set up a unique way of encouraging the players to hit plenty of fours and sixes.

"There are eight Scrumpy Jack apple targets placed around the Test grounds and if players hit them they win cash for their chosen charities," said George Thomas, of Bulmers.

"The Hit the Apple challenge is a unique sponsored charity event between Scrumpy Jack and England's Test cricket grounds that could earn £50,000 for charity over the course of this cricketing season."

The scheme was launched at Edgbaston, in Birmingham, with TV actor and comedian Jasper Carrott on hand to give encouragement at the "Hit the Apple" trial run.

A total of £5,000 was raised for Birmingham's Sunfield School for children with learning difficulties.
