A delegation of Libyan politicians was due to visit Westminster after a weekend visit to the Lockerbie bomber as his wife spoke of her plans to move to Scotland, where he is serving a life sentence.

The group visited Glasgow's Barlinnie jail yesterday, where Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi has been jailed since losing an appeal against his conviction over the 1988 atrocity.

Megrahi was convicted of murder for smuggling a bomb aboard Pan Am Flight 103, which exploded over Lockerbie on December 21, 1988, with the loss of 270 lives. Among the victims were Helga Mosey, from Cradley, near Malvern and Flora Swire of Bromsgrove.

Labour MP Tam Dalyell, who believes Al Megrahi is innocent, said: "The Libyan delegation has specifically come here (Scotland) to see Mr Megrahi before the official visit starts tomorrow."

The seven-strong delegation, led by Suleiman Sasi Al-Shahoumi, foreign affairs secretary in the General People's Congress, are due to meet Foreign Office ministers as well as MPs and peers from all political parties this week.

It is the first recorded Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) by a Libyan delegation to the UK.
