EMMA Williams and newcomer Gemma Russell tasted success at the Worcestershire County Junior Trials held at Evesham High School.

The pair enjoyed some very promising tight five-set victories over tough opposition and Williams earned overall first place on the day with a good three set victory over Russell.

Williams secured her position with some fine forehand and backhand drives and fought well under a lot of pressure.

Russell managed to pick up the pieces after losing to Williams and won all of her other matches including her final match against Dudley's Lynsey Garbutt which she needed to secure second place.

She showed determination and fought her way back narrowly saving the fourth set and being 8-5 down in the fifth set amazingly took the next six points to take the match.

Russell gained a well-deserved second place on the day and enforced Worcester's claim in the Worcestershire Junior County Girls' squad.

The pair both attend coaching at the YMCA, Henwick Road, Worcester on Tuesdays from 6.30-9pm, organised by Worcester Table Tennis League.

The league welcomes any juniors, no matter what level of experience, to the sessions. Admission is £1 and anyone interested should report to the table tennis room and speak to Lewis Siket, the league's Coaching Officer.
