RUBERY traders are being asked for their views on the possibility of a monthly farmers' market operating in the village.
Farmers could flock to the parish on the fourth Saturday of every month if Bromsgrove District Council receives a positive response from New Road shopkeepers.
On Monday, the authority's economic development officer, Peter Michael, hand delivered a letter and survey to each business.
The survey asks if the traders want the market on their doorstep, seeks suggestions and says the council will normally approve such events - providing local businesses back the scheme.
In May, Bromsgrove's Thursday farmers' market folded following dwindling support from traders.
But, the town's Saturday farmers' market is still a hit with shoppers.
The markets are usually made up of ten or more farmers selling their own produce direct to the public from stalls in a town high street.
Mr Michael has already received interest from nine local farmers who would like to sell their wares in Rubery and he hopes to get 12 on board.
It is not yet known where the market would be held, although the council's letter says a prominent location is essential.
It also says the market should not be a direct threat to established traders, including butchers and greengrocers, because market products are usually specialised and priced accordingly, so local shops are not undercut.
District councillor Peter McDonald (Lab - Uffdown and Waseley) suggested the idea, which he said received support at a recent village traders' meeting.
"This is a very exciting project for the future," he said. "It's the first time I have experienced traders, councillors and council officers working as one to improve Rubery's high street."
Rubery Village Business Association chairman John Horwood said: "We are keen to find out more about the project and then we can make an informed decision."
