THE new chairman of Bromsgrove District Council, Cllr Maurice Broomfield, was one of five local recipients of the commemorative Queen's Silver Jubilee medal. The others were Joe Wainwright, former player and manager of Bromsgrove Rovers, Sydney Edmondson, chief dental technician at the General Hospital, George Shopland, of Sidemoor, who served 40 years with the East Worcestershire Waterworks Company, and Agnes Edwards, a nurse from Alvechurch Highway.

ALAN Parsons, captain of Bromsgrove Rovers, was presented with the Player of the Year trophy at the club's annual dinner and dance held at the town's Perry Hall Hotel. He was also the first to receive the new Eric Belk award for being nominated Man of the Match the most times in Messenger reports. Mr Belk had reported Rovers games for 40 years as a reporter and as editor.
