BROMSGROVE CC First XI endured a reversal in fortunes at the weekend after winning in Birmingham and District Premier division one but crashing out of the national club championship.

The Boars recorded only their second league win of the season on Saturday with a crushing 116-run home victory over Harborne but 24 hours later lost by five wickets to Finedon and Dolben in the national club championship.

Skipper Nick Husbands knew Sunday's cup defeat was a missed opportunity for his side to establish themselves in the competition.

He said: "Sunday was disappointing. Finedon were a good side but they were missing key players and we really should have done better. It was a huge game and we weren't quite there.

"We have had a good run but we've missed a chance to go far in the competition - they are the weakest side we've played in the cup and the lads know that."

Batting first, Bromsgrove began brightly through Duffy (34) and Richard Barnes (23) but they were pegged back by tight bowling.

West (5-26) was the chief destroyer as the Boars were bowled out for just 131 in 42 overs.

In reply, Husbands and Davies both took crucial wickets to hold the visitors back but skipper Coleman (57no) stood firm.

The Bromsgrove bowlers kept it tight but Finedon reached their target in the 44th over.

The result was a total contrast to Saturday's comfortable win against Harborne where the Boars demonstrated how efficient they can be.

Bromsgrove batted first with Nick Davies (53) and Simon Keyte (56) putting on 100 for the first wicket before Davies and Hamilton (8) were removed and Barnes went for a duck.

Paul Duffy kept the momentum going with some excellent running and the innings was finished off well by Campbell (24 not out) and John Duffy (21no), taking the score to 203-5 from 55 overs.

The assault on the Harborne batting was immediate as Gear, a major threat for the visitors, was removed without score following a catch in the gulley by Paul Husbands.

A hostile spell of bowling ensued with skipper Nick Husbands and Davies reducing Harborne to 24-5.

Not even a 30-minute rain delay, reducing the match by eight overs, could dampen the Bromsgrove spirit with only Pakistan test player Raj Nayyar (55no) offering any resistance.

Spinners Kish Patel (2-11) and Paul Husbands (1-16) looked to finish the game off for the Boars before Davies returned to remove Simms to another quality catch by Paul Duffy.

The last wicket fell with just two overs remaining. Davies returned figures of 4-28 and Nick Husbands took 3-31.

Husbands added: "The discipline and urgency were good when we batted and we took some great catches and bowled really well. It was a great win and all round team effort."
