OBVIOUSLY someone in Droitwich has been miserly and bought some cheap, dodgy calendars!

That can be the only explanation for finding the Norbury Theatre's foyer and bar area, in the middle of June, boasting a Christmas tree and festive decorations......and the seasonal offering of Scrooge on stage.

I know our winters are getting warmer, and that each year it does seem as if Christmas arrrives earlier than ever - but this was taking the situation to the extreme to have carols being sung close to the height of summer.

Not only did the theatre raise a few amused eyebrows with its choice and time of this production, but eyebrows were also raised over what was an ambitious project - particularly when you consider the size of cast required and the repertoire of songs that fall to various voices.

So congratulations have to be offered to all involved for not only creating the spirit of Christmas - both past and present, but also for coping with some panache with the considerable pace and change that this musical requires.

The all amateur cast overcame some early first night nerves to reveal an enthusiasm and enjoyment that filtered through to a healthy audience and they fully deserved the generous applause their final number met.

Martin Bourne, playing the title role, was an excellent Ebeneezer. He had a strong voice and a confident stage presence and looked very comfortable in the part.

Impressive performances too from Mike Matthews (Jacob Marley) and Mark Develin (the Ghost of Christmas Present).

Mark may be well known to some readers as a voice on BBC Hereford and Worcester and his deep tones were ideal for this part, while Mike reminded me of a demonic Danny de Vito playing the Penguin in the Batman film!

Johsua Wyatt (Tiny Tim) did well too, especially with his little solo number, while Graham Day (Bob Cratchit) was suitably humble.

It has to be said that not all the songs worked and several numbers were far better when the whole cast was on stage, obviously providing that much needed comfort blanket.

But credit where credit is due - everyone tried and everyone did their best, and you can't ask or expect anything more.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable night at the theatre.

But please - can someone there afford a new diary before we get to December as I'm dreading to think what will be on stage in the run up to Christmas........!!!!

Scrooge - The Musical runs at the Norbury Theatre, in Friar Street, Droitwich until Saturday, June 22.
