A WORCESTER man was spotted by a neighbour as he tried to break into a parked car.

The woman called police after seeing Jason Telford crouch suspiciously by the driver's door in the early hours of the morning.

Worcester magistrates heard it was one of three cars that the 31-year-old attempted to break into.

"He was seen in the early hours of Sunday, May 3 by a witness in Belmont Street, Rainbow Hill," said Sally Hill, prosecuting.

"The witness watched from a window and saw him trying to break into an Audi vehicle. He had a pushbike up against it.

"He was crouched in a suspicious manner so she called the police."

Short chase

The police arrived soon after, around 4.30am and saw the bike beside a Metro, Telford was stood by the car.

"He tried to make off on the bike and a short chase ensued, involving the police dog. He crashed his bike into a Fiat Uno."

The bike was discovered to be stolen and a search of his house found a small foil wrap of amphetamines.

Telford, of Maple Avenue, Tolladine, admitted the attempted break-ins, handling stolen goods and possession of amphetamines.

"He's had a dreadful problem with drugs some years ago that's now been addressed," said Andrew Childs, defending.

"He's kept out of trouble for three years but he's on a cocktail of drugs to help him.

"These make him drowsy and he uses amphetamines to give him a kickstart. It's as simple as that."

The hearing was adjourned for pre-sentence reports to Tuesday, July 9. He was released on conditional bail.

A charge of criminal damage has been denied.
