A SIMPLISTIC view of the recent Bewdley parish poll on road safety measures might indicate a majority against the scheme, but a closer analysis of the figures shows the opposite.

There were 1,124 people who voted against the scheme, but 6,360 either did not vote at all or voted for the scheme.

By not voting, more than 6,000 people showed their tacit acceptance of - or perhaps their indifference to - whichever scheme is chosen.

Further analysis of the figures shows more than 1,000 strongly in favour of road safety measures, a mere 200 wanting no scheme at all, nearly 2,000 in favour of a scheme targeted at danger points (which the present scheme already is) and a mere 200 against this.

All I can say to those people voting against is this. Some 3,500 people are killed on the roads each and every year, more than were killed on September 11.

We should see this as a national disaster and take any steps necessary to cut down the tragic loss of life.
