SIXTEEN keen golfers are planning to "putt" themselves out for a good cause when they literally swing into action for a mammoth challenge next week.

The 54-Hole Golf Society will be spending the "hole" of Monday playing their way around the course at Kidderminster Golf Club, apart from the odd tea break - or should that be tee break? Kidderminster Golf Club's Alan Stanyer, Alan Biggs and Patrick Smith in training for Monday's mammoth golf day.

It is the event's fourth year and participants hope to raise a record amount - more than £2,000 - for this year's charity, which is Cancer Research in memory of former society member Trevor Evans, who died last month aged 54.

Yorkshireman Mr Evans, a furniture company director, had taken part in previous events to generate cash for different worthy causes.

Organiser Alan Biggs, a former Kidderminster Golf Club secretary, started the challenge four years ago as a tribute to club captain John Hudson when he was unable to make his funeral - and to prove it is possible to play 54 holes, or three rounds, in one day.

Other members taking part are Alan Gregory, Alan Stanyer, Ted Noon, Bill Smith and Bill Styles.

Club assistant professional Pat Smith and newly qualified freelance professional Nathan Bennett will also be taking part alongside Bob Hunter, Chris Tompkin, Gary Shuck, Lee Shuck, Paul Ward, Barry Price, Gerald Weaver and Gordon Green.

Mr Biggs said: "The average age is over 60 but this year some of the younger members will be doing 72 holes and will have to start at 5.30am or 6am."
