NEWLAND entertained table-topping Cape Hill Victoria on Saturday and secured maximum WCL Division Five points after a superb display.

NEWLAND v CAPE HILL VICTORIA

Electing to bat first Newland faced an excellent opening spell of bowling, Genever departed for eight but the resurgent Steve Freeman was playing each ball on its merits and slowly accumulating runs. He and White upped the tempo and added 60 runs when the change bowlers came on before White departed for 28.

Phil Birch announced his arrival at the crease with a crashing off drive. The pair had taken the score to 147 and Freeman had reached another half century but he became Ghafoor's (3-38) first victim when he dragged a ball onto his stumps. Birch found little support as wickets tumbled around him but he was still finding the boundary.

Astute captaincy from Cape Hill ensured that Birch had very little strike and frustration got the better of him and he was bowled for 37. The tail end eked out a few runs as Constable (4-28) ensured wickets continued to fall and, as extras chipped in with 38, Newland made it to 186.

After an excellent tea, thoroughly enjoyed by the opposition, Newland took the field lean and hungry for a result.

The breakthrough came in the third over when Metcalfe hit the stumps and then White snaffled a catch from Rouse. The fifth over saw six superb deliveries from Metcalfe, Malik had his off stump knocked back and next ball saw Tanwir's off stump cart wheeling leaving Cape Hill reeling at 8-4.

At no point did Cape Hill attempt to consolidate and the dangerous Shah gave Metcalfe (4-21) his fourth victim when Sayers clung on to a skier. Asif bludgeoned 15 off a Rouse over before the veteran bowler removed his leg stump leaving Cape Hill at 33-6.

With Metcalfe resting, Harrison (3-6) announced his arrival with the ball taking a wicket with the first delivery as Cape Hill Victoria folded to 53 all out, Rouse 3-29 ably supported by his fielders gave Newland a crushing 133 run victory.
