Having just spent three weeks in the USA, it was noticeable how many homes, shops and institutions flew the Stars and Stripes and as visitors, the sense of patriotism was palpable.
Equally it has been wonderful to see the number of flags put up for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations and the World Cup.
For several days we have all felt really good about our country.
Can I suggest that, whether we are monarchists or not, football fans or not, we leave the flags out permanently to engender in young and old alike, a sense of loyalty and patriotism, and to celebrate the diversity of our wonderful country.
It's not too late to buy a flag and put it out for the rest of the season.
