THE Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations may seem like an impressive feat, but for one West Malvern couple a 50-year celebration is positively pass.

Catherine and Dennis Baker, of Old Hollow, celebrated their diamond jubilee yesterday (Thursday), 60 years after they married.

Both have lived in West Malvern for most of their lives. Dennis, 82, was born in nearby Pump Street, while Catherine, 80, known as Kit, moved to West Malvern aged four months.

After meeting at a Malvern Link fair, the pair married four years later and have since raised four sons, ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

During the Second World War, Mr Baker served with the Royal Navy on many ships including the Ark Royal and HMS Ledbury. He spent so much time away from home that he did not see his first son until 18 months after his birth. He then worked as a painter until he retired in 1980.

Mrs Baker worked in a Worcester munitions factory during the war, before working for Malvern Hills District Council in home help. The couple settled in Lower Road and moved into their present home in 1983.

The couple freely admit that the 60 years has not gone without arguments, but say that forgiveness is the key to a happy marriage.

"If you agree with everyone for 60 years you're in wonderland," Kit said.

"You've got to work together to sort out your troubles," agreed Dennis.
