A WORCESTER man has warned that the access route to Diglis Basin could cause chaos for people living on it.
Graeme Clark, of Bath Road, is urging those who would be affected by the development to act now before it is too late.
Mr Clark said the idea of developing the area was excellent - but said people would be disturbed wherever the access road was built.
The new proposal would involve creating a link road between Diglis Road and Bath Road, to cater for the residents living in the residential area of Diglis Basin.
The people of Diglis have objected to an access road in the past and are unlikely to be impressed with the new proposal.
"With the old proposal, Diglis Road was going to be a dead end at the Cherry Orchard end," said Mr Clark.
"The new proposal would mean traffic running along Diglis Road. Residents will see a huge amount of traffic going down Diglis Road.
"I think the development is a wonderful idea - we need housing and a good waterfront, but it's just a question of road access."
He said residents on Diglis Road would have to put up with lorries while the building was taking place, but would then have to put up with increased traffic on a permanent basis when people moved in to the new houses.
A spokesman for Bryant Homes said the location of the link road was chosen because it featured in Worcester City Council's Local Plan.
He said a variety of options had been explored but this choice was in line with council policy.
Coun Derek Prodger said the council was keen to use the site for a mixed use development and said he welcomed the proposal in general terms.
"It's well overdue for redevelopment," he said.
"The city would benefit tremendously from the mixed use.
"The access road is always a headache. It's a big issue - with some common sense we may be able to resolve the problem."
