UNLESS Mr Mountford has an excellent knowledge of history, I should be surprised if he can name more than three wars motivated solely by religion.

I am sure, however, that he can name several wars that have not been motivated by religion in the slightest.

The First and Second World Wars are two examples. Religion is more often a rubber stamp that is attached to greed or political instability as a motive.

I suppose that the statue in front of Worcester Cathedral was meant not to glorify war, but rather to show the work of God in comforting and supporting those who fight for truth and justice.

M CLARKE, Worcester.
