100 years ago - March 1 1902
JOHN Henry Hiles, a blacksmith of Childswickham, was charged with being drunk while in charge of a horse and cart on February 23. PC Poulson said he saw the defendant coming up Bridge Street, apparently half asleep in his cart. Coming round the corner he grazed the pavement and then stopped at the Railway Hotel where he staggered out drunk. As it was a serious offence, he was fined £1, including costs.

A DISTINCT earth tremor was felt at Fladbury on the morning of last Saturday between five and six o'clock. A cottager living near the railway station, who was up at the time, said there was a low rumbling noise, like the passing of a heavy vehicle.

EVESHAM Rural District Council which had completed 1,389 council houses up to February 1 - 441 since the last war - still has 623 applicants on its housing lists. Apart from the 52 houses under construction at the beginning of February, and 49 allocated last year but not started, the council hopes to be in a position to begin new building operations this year on seven sites to accommodate 85 new houses. It is also looking at seven sites for 142 houses for next year.

IT could be Hobson's choice - take it or leave it- one course meals in Evesham schools from April. This is the recommendation of the education priorities working party, which meets tomorrow to draw up final "battle" plans to slash £2.2m from the county education budget.
