100 years ago - February 15 1902

AT the fortnightly meeting of the Evesham Literary and Debating Society held in the Town Hall on Monday night, the Rev R Davis spoke of the very bad effect topping and unfair packing had on the growing industry. He was afraid the day of the small growers was past unless there was some change in the methods of distribution. He thought a large market at Evesham at which the wholesale houses would be represented would help them out of the difficulty.

February 12 1927

LARGE and enthusiastic audiences have been attending the Scala Theatre in Evesham this week to witness the performances of the Evesham Amateur Operatic Society in the musical play "Katinka." The play, a modern musical comedy, is a change in style from any of their previous productions and has been very well received by all who have seen it.

50 years ago

February 16 1952

TRIBUTES to the late King George VI, who died on February 6, were held in all places of worship in Evesham on Sunday. A civic service of Commemoration was also held in All Saints Church on Friday afternoon. In the Baptist Church, the Rev W E Lawrence offered prayers for the new Queen, and the service ended with the Dead March in Saul being played and a rendition of the National Anthem.

February 17 1977

FREE parking in Evesham's car parks brought pandemonium to the town on the Saturday of the first weekend following Wychavon District Council's decision to abolish all parking charges, Mr R Cartwright said at Evesham Town Council's meeting. Mr Cartwright said that all the parks were full by 9am and later in the day people found themselves blocked in and had to wait hours before they could get out again.
