100 years ago - February 8, 1902

THE annual supper to the Post Office employees took place in the Farmers and Merchants Hall on Saturday night, when the good company sat down to an excellent spread provided by Mr B Carter, of the Wickhamford Dairy. Mr G E Crisp, whose name was coupled with the toast, said that during the past year nothing very eventful had happened.

February 5 1927

AT about midnight on Thursday a fire was discovered at the shop and premises of Mr F Gegg, in High Street, Evesham. The fire was discovered by PC Poulson while passing. Mr and Mrs Gegg, who with their child had been at supper at the house of Mr H A Elliott, were informed of the outbreak and arrived on the scene shortly afterwards. The fire brigade worked hard for some time, but a large portion of the premises was destroyed.

February 9 1952

A CHEQUE for £1,004 12s - the proceeds of Evesham's Festival of Britain effort - was handed to councillor F J Masters, chairman of the Bell Tower Restoration Fund, in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. Councillor Tim Robbins, festival committee restoration, who presented the cheque, said he thought the town's success was a record for the country in relation to the population, as the sum represented nearly 2s per head for every man, woman and child in the town.

February 10 1977

AN 11-year-old Evesham schoolboy was back in his class at St Egwin's this week after his "terrifying nightmare" after listening to a tape on Yuri Geller, the Israeli "spoon-bender." Adrian Whatmore of Atch Lench Road, Church Lench, woke up screaming in the middle of the night after listening to tapes on extra sensory perception during an English lesson. He was off school for two days.
