WILLIAM Averill, a labourer of Broadway, was summoned for being drunk on January 11. PS Lewis stated that on the eleventh, he found the defendant very drunk near the Coach and Horses. The defendant had nothing to say and was fined 5s and 5s 6d costs.

January 29 1927

THE senior department of Bengeworth School has been closed this week on account of the continuance of measles and mumps. The school will remain closed until February 14, and during that time the Sunday School will not be held. The infants department was closed on January 20.

February 2 1952

TO meet increased repair and maintenance expenses, Evesham Rural District Council decided on Monday that the rents of all but a few of their 1,398 houses must be increased from March 28. The increases range from 6d to 2s 6d a week, but most of the council house tenants will have to pay 1s 6d a week more. For over 200 tenants the increase will be 2s a week. The decision was made following a comprehensive review of the rents by a sub-committee of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.

CUTS of £334,000 in social service spending approved by Hereford and Worcester County Council's co-ordinating and resources committee on Tuesday will mean extra hardship for the Vale of Evesham's disabled, elderly and handicapped. The cuts, which are the second wave of economy measures forced on the authority by the Government's decision to reduce its rate support grant, will mean greatly reduced services, visits and facilities for those most in need.
