100 years ago - May 24, 1902
THE Cyclist Corps of the 1st V.B South Staffordshire regiment under the command of Captain S W Tonks, of Moseley, Birmingham, have been encamped in Pershore during the Whitsun holidays. They came on their cycles on Saturday evening, and as the townspeople were made aware of the visit, a large number gathered at the Royal Three Tuns Hotel to welcome them.

EVESHAM and its surrounding district will provide the scenes and settings for a new film being produced this weekend. The film, The King's Highway, is based on Lord Lytton's "Paul Clifford", and is the story of highwaymen and escapades in the 18th century. It is being produced by Stoll Picture Production Limited, of Cricklewood, London, and stars Matheson Lang as Paul Clifford.

EVESHAM United Football Club's visit to Dreux last weekend to play Dreux Athletic Club attracted more than local interest in France; it was an international match in miniature. A French national newspaper congratulated Dreux and Evesham for organising the game, which it hoped would lead to similar fixtures between amateur clubs representing other small towns on opposite sides of the English Channel. Evesham United won the game 5-2.

THERE is mounting support in the Vale of Evesham for national moves to make the wearing of lifejackets compulsory for canoeists and other open-boat sailors. The suggestion, made by the Royal Life Saving Society is being keenly supported by the Worcestershire Life Guard Club, whose members patrol the Avon between Pershore and Evesham.
