ST Peter's residents have challenged councillors who approved Tesco's application to open for 24 hours a day to face the music at a public meeting.

People living near the store are furious the firm's application to open around the clock was passed by Worcester City Council, and have demanded an explanation from members of the planning committee who gave the proposals the thumbs-up.

They argue 24-hour opening will make their lives a misery, with increased noise and traffic volume through the estate.

They have now issued a fierce battle-cry, and are organising a public meeting for others to air their views.

Resident Sally Mills, speaking at a meeting of St Peter's Parish Council on Monday night, branded the approval of the plan "a disgrace".

"I would like those councillors who were so adamant Tesco should be allowed 24-hour opening to come and face us," she said.

"Even if it is just in front of me, I would like them to stand up and give their reasons. If they do not, they will find they will have visitors to them."

Residents are concerned round the clock opening will increase danger on St Peter's Drive and will also mean more noise with lorries coming and going throughout the night.

They are also concerned the open store will attract "gangs" of youths to the site at night.

Hundreds of objections to the plans were sent into Worcester City Council in the run-up to the planning meeting on Thursday, June 13.

Despite residents' feelings, council officers recommended the plans for approval, and councillors passed the proposals by a majority of one.

St Peter's parish councillors are supporting residents' bid to overturn the decision.

The date of a public meeting held to discuss the store is due to be announced in the near future.
