A new learning centre could soon benefit youngsters in The Gambia thanks to a retired Bromsgrove teacher.
Former North Bromsgrove High School teacher Mike Carrick is co-ordinating an ambitious project to extend a school in the African country of Gambia. He has teamed up with ex-colleagues and students to collect much-needed cash for the project.
Armitage Senior Secondary School, in Janjang-Bureh, The Gambia, has an official link with the town high school.
A new building for library facilities is desperately needed at Armitage Senior and a neighbouring middle school.
"Already we have received just over half of the £20,000 needed to complete the project," said Mike.
"This has enabled us to buy the building machines, have them shipped out to The Gambia and then transported the 200 miles inland to the school on Janjang-Bureh Island in the River Gambia, ready to start the building."
Mike is now looking for help in raising the extra £9,500 needed to buy materials, hire the men and construct the building.
"We hope to eventually add internet facilities, which are useful to connect into the whole world of knowledge.
"The building machines will be put to further good use providing students with teaching courses in modern building methods, a skill training which will be very valuable in the area," he added.
Consulting engineers John Parry & Associates Ltd has supplied hand operated machines for building, including a concrete mixer, block maker and roof tile-maker.
Donations have been sought from generous organisations and private individuals. To make a donation call Mike Carrick on 01527 873135.
