June 28 1902

THE first intimation the public of Evesham had that his Majesty, King Edward VII, was seriously ill and that the Coronation was postponed was by means of a telegram posted in the window of Messrs W & H Smith Ltd, at The Journal buildings. The tidings spread with great rapidity and produced a feeling akin to panic, and crowds soon surrounded the window and from that time all business in the town was suspended.

July 2 1927

THE visit of a party of London schoolgirls to Evesham this week is a decided innovation as far as the town is concerned, since they are the first members of a London school to visit Evesham on an educational tour. The party consists of 56 girls from the Ensham Central School of London SW17. They arrived on Friday and will be staying until Friday next, billeted at various houses in the district.

DESPITE the good news that the Royal Engineers from Long Marston will stay at Chadbury Lock and carry out very much more work than they originally agreed to do, Evesham's "Save the Avon" Appeal for £4,000 was still as urgent as it ever was. Mr G R Speed, the appeal chairman, said on Wednesday: "We shall need between £1,500 and £2,000 by the end of July as the latest, before we can feel fairly certain that the repairs can be kept moving by the supply of materials.

HOPES of averting the threatened all-out strike by prison officers at Long Lartin were raised this week following a meeting between Lord Harris, the Home Office minister responsible for prisons, senior home office officials, and Mr Michael Spicer, MP for South Worcestershire. Mr Spicer told the Journal after the meeting that he was hopeful that a solution would be found before the July 6 deadline to the prison manning dispute, which has already included the non-manning of prison workshops and an end to prisoners' day and evening classes.
