THE annual Tom Webster Trophy cricket match at Birlingham ended in the Invitation XI holding on to the trophy for the third year against the Fossils.

The Invitation team were in trouble against 74-year-old Darkie Reynolds who took the first three wickets to make it 16-3. Skipper Kevin Gilbert hit a patient 33 as Tony Neel (2-16) and Ted Bradshaw (1-27) put a tight hold on the batsmen, but Tim Millis (34no) boosted the total to 135-9.

Fossils lost John Shepherd for 11 before Liz Dean (13) and Geoff Southall (15) put the ship in order. Martin Mudway and Mick Holloway (16) slogged some quick runs but it was left to skipper John Reynolds to see his team to a draw on 105-8 with a careful 19no.

Against Dominies, Mick Loynes (74) was in fine form and skipper Mick Williams hit a quick 38. Cliff Rawlings (3-90) and Shepherd (3-49) were the pick of the Fossils attack in a total of 209-8.

Fossils shot off at a rate of knots with Shepherd (28) and Brian Pleass (22) putting on 51 in nine overs. Kevin Gilbert smashed nine fours in his 52, but as the score mounted wickets kept falling and Reynolds and Geoff Southall were left to fight for the draw.
