D E MARGRETT (You Say, June 21) criticises me and other councillors for opposing a planning application for a dental surgery in Beech Avenue and allegedly in Barbourne, too.
I opposed the Beech Avenue application on the grounds that it was the wrong location.
The conversion of a private dwelling house would set a precedent for further conversions that might eventually alter the character of what is a purely residential road.
A further consideration was that a surgery would exacerbate the traffic problems that residents already suffer at certain times of the day.
There has been no planning application for a dental surgery in Barbourne, as Mr Margrett alleges. The only other application that I am aware of is for a dental surgery in a former shop at Dines Green. That sounds a far more suitable site.
Mr Margrett accuses local residents of nimbyism. I hope that no one will ever be intimidated by this type of cheap jibe, which was also used by some against those who opposed the choice of Perdiswell as the location for the park-and-ride terminal.
What a gutless nation we would be if our citizens were not prepared to speak up in order to safeguard the environment in which they live and to defend what they hold dear.
COUN MARY DRINKWATER,
Worcester.
