A RESOUNDING 132 run victory over Brockhampton saw Colwall through to the last 32 of the National Village Knockout on Sunday after a comprehensive batting performance.

BROCKHAMPTON v COLWALL

Batting first, having won the toss, Colwall took little time to work up a healthy run rate with opener Dave Powell executing some fine offside boundaries. Fellow opener Tom Wolfendale fell early on however, misjudging a hook shot to be caught behind off the toe of the bat from Williams' (1-23) accurate spell.

Powell and Richard Williams next added 62 for the second wicket with the latter bringing up a fine 53 ball half century to push the Colwall assault on to 84 in the opening 20 overs. His 11 boundaries in an excellent top score of 62 allowed the visitors to surge on in the closing, before he and Powell (30) fell to Jennings medium pace.

Tim Riley's 24 runs in as many balls and Lee Hankins hard-hitting 30 propelled Colwall past the five runs an over mark, before Steve Ferguson's flamboyant innings capped a sound batting display. The wicket keeper's 44 runs in just 27 balls was the mainstay of Colwall's late surge as he and Jordan Kontarines (31no) shared 63 for the sixth wicket.

The pair scored an outstanding 31 runs in the 38th over and with wickets tumbling in the closing stages, Colwall finished on a challenging 252-8 from their 40 overs.

Brockhampton's reply was always an uphill struggle following Jordan Kontarines' impressive opening overs that yielded two wickets for only nine runs. Josh Hornyold continued the downfall to collect Hewlett's wicket after Ferguson's diving catch before Nahorniak and Walker's third wicket stand kept Brock in sight of the required run rate.

The pair's 42 runs threatened temporarily before Richard Williams' tight spell removed Walker for 16. Nick Price's snappy 19 was the last hope for the home side as Dave Sutton and James Wagstaff's spin wrapped up the game inside 31 overs. Wagstaff's 1-33 and Sutton's superb 4-17 ensured Colwall became regional winners for the fourth year running after Ferguson's double stumping and further two catches.

Nahornaik's patient innings fell only one short of a gritty half century as Kontarines (3-31 off 7) claimed his and the final wicket to leave Brockhampton all out on 120.

In the first of the national rounds Colwall play Isham, the winners of the Northamptonshire group, on Sunday week (July 7) at Stowe Lane.
