WITH ruffled gipsy shirts and flouncy skirts filling the hangers of fashion boutiques, the dance inspiring the look comes to Malvern for a series of workshops starting this weekend.

Both men and women will have the opportunity to embrace the passion and physical demands of the traditional Andalucian gipsy dance, flamenco.

From 1.30pm tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, beginners will be able to learn the simple but striking pattern of steps with Carlos Ottero, who organiser Rachel Keller described as an "excellent performer and a very patient and gentle teacher".

Improvers who have some knowledge of the dance can work with professional flamenco dancer Ana Garcia to put together a short performance.

The classes are brought by Flamenco for All, a small group of Malvern-based flamenco addicts keen to encourage others to learn the stylish dance routines, which vary from the fast and fiery to the slow and soulful.

Because the workshops are subsidised, the prices are only £9 for a weekend, which includes two hours on both Saturday and Sunday.

Further sessions continue in October, November, Decem-ber and March.

In October Carmelo Rom-ero, who took a cameo role in the Mask of Zorro, will help to demonstrate how to infuse the dance with style and passion.

In March, tapas (with vegetarian options) will be served after the workshops while students watch an evening performance by international flamenco group Alma.

Rachel said people are welcome to come along and have a go, whether on their own or with a partner.

"Some people are self-conscious about trying out something new and different," she said.

"They often think they will look silly but you soon get the hang of the basics.

"It's great fun, very relaxed and there is plenty of opportunity to practice the steps."

Flamenco guitar tuition is also on offer.
