NEWLAND made the trip to Stone on Saturday and ground out an excellent 24 WCL Division Five points as they defeated their hosts by 46 runs.
STONE v NEWLAND
Newland won the toss and elected to bat on a very bouncy strip, both openers struggled to gain any control and Newland had slumped to 22-2 as Durnell made the early in roads. Dave White maintained his fine form with an assured batting display and skipper Tolley was suddenly finding the middle of the bat.
The pair added a precious 84 runs when Tolley was stumped for 31, meantime White passed the 50 mark with his trademark pull shot but Buxton (2-29) had him well caught on the mid wicket boundary for 58.
Churchill (16) and Spiers (15) added 30 more before the dangerous Durnell returned to put the skids under the Newland innings. The bowler snared three quick wickets to finish 5-36. Newland's Steve Freeman arrived just in time to smash two boundaries in three balls and Stone required 171 to win.
The Stone innings got off to dreadful start as Clive Churchill found the bouncing wicket much to his liking forcing the batsmen to fend off vicious deliveries straight to the grateful hands of the Newland fielders.
Stone consolidated as Bryant and Glover negotiated Churchill's immediate threat and then slowly but surely built up runs.
Newland slackened in the field to allow Stone to profit from errors and the score had gone onto 90 when Churchill (3-40) was brought back. He had Glover trapped in front for 37 and then a run out saw four wickets down.
Meantime Bryant reached 50 but Chris Genever saw his reward from controlled legspin when having Bryant caught behind for 60.
Some lusty hitting from Bourke (17) could not save Stone as the tail folded to Spiers (2-23) and Beavan (1-11) leaving Newland victorious by 46 runs.
