ZIMBABWE'S Mark McNulty stormed to the top of the leaderboard as the second round of the Murphy's Irish Open got under way at Fota Island today.
The 48-year-old, whose best finish this year was his 19th at the Volvo PGA Championship, took advantage of ideal conditions to fire six birdies in an outward 30 and move two shots clear at nine under par.
McNulty birdied the par-four second hole and then added five in a row in a blistering run from the fourth.
Joint overnight leader Peter O'Malley of Australia picked up two shots in his opening nine to move to seven under at the turn while Eduardo Romero of Argentina improved his overnight position by one shot to move into third place on six under.
Of the other first-round leaders, Fred Funk lost ground with a double bogey six at the third to slip back to three under par.
Evesham's Jeremy Robinson led the Worcestershire challenge at one under par with Droitwich's John Bickerton at four over. David Park of Hereford was one over.
