RECENTLY, there has been a number of letters published in You Say condemning the scarcity of Union Flags flying in celebration of the Golden Jubilee.

Much criticism, rightly, has been levelled at the Mayor and council at the very poor showing of flags atop the Guildhall.

While it is true the council did fly the flag of St George of England, it has to be asked whether this for the Queen or the England football team.

If the former, they were totally incorrect. The Queen was enthroned Monarch of the United Kingdom not just of England.

It also has to be remembered the flag of St George was only flown after letters published in You Say.

How different from the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada, which probably has a population less than Worcester.

There, nearly 5,000 framed portraits of The Queen were distributed to schools, libraries, First National Indian Tribes, Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachments and other public buildings across the Province.

To each of its schools and libraries, a copy of a 40-page booklet Royal Reflections marking the visit of The Prince of Wales in 2001, was given.

How different from Tony Blair, who said the Government could not afford to distribute Golden Jubilee Mugs to schoolchildren, but could waste more than £1bn on The Dome.

In addition, the Provincial Government has committed $30,000 towards a cast of a bronze statue of the Queen riding Burmese, her favourite horse, a gift from the RCMP in 1969.

How different to Worcester City Council which would not fly one Union Flag.
