SCHOOLS in Worcester are being urged to end the "crazy" practice of locking up playing fields during the summer.

City MP Mike Foster has made the plea in a letter to every head teacher in his constituency, saying the policy is hindering the city's youngsters.

He has also written to Worcestershire County Council to make sure there are no "legal obstacles" which would prevent the schools from keeping the playing fields open.

"There is nothing as crazy as having publicly-owned playing fields off-limits to the public during the summer holidays," said Mr Foster, a Parliamentary aide in the education department.

"For six weeks, pupils have the chance to spend time outside, in the fresh air, playing sport.

"They should do so where it is safe and appropriate - and the obvious place is a sports field or pitch.

"There are many organised activities for young people in the summer. However, many will just want to organise a kick-about between their friends.

"This should be encouraged, not stopped. That is why I have written to schools to see what they will or won't allow to take place this summer."

Mr Foster said it could benefit residents as well as children.

"We hear lots of complaints about youngsters hanging around, doing nothing," he added.

"At the same time, young people complain they are bored, with nothing to do."

"Meanwhile, the neighbouring sports field lies empty and the gate locked. It just doesn't make sense."

Mr Foster is particularly keen to see the larger sports fields at the city's high schools kept open.
