PUPILS from Worcestershire schools put their skills to the test when they took part in a Festival of Languages Showcase.

Yesterday's event at Prince Henry's High School, in Evesham, involved 19 schools, including special schools.

They celebrated the diversity of language and battled to win computer equipment.

Tongues wagged in French and German, along with Spanish and Japanese.

"This was an ideal opportunity for pupils to show off their linguistic skills," said Steve Jones, Worcestershire County Council's senior inspector for modern foreign languages.

"Pupils and staff have worked very hard to write their own plays and songs."

It was sponsored by Evesham Micros.

"The standard is always very high."

The schools that took part in the Festival of Languages Showcase included Manor Park Special School, Worcester, Elgar Technology College, Worcester, St Egwin's CE Middle School, Evesham and Stourport High School.

which provided the prize of a combined scanner and other computer equipment, for the best overall performance.

The festival is an annual event and is aimed at highlighting the talents of middle, high and special schools in Key Stages 3 and 4.

Later in the year there will be a European day of languages.
