A COURAGEOUS Bromsgrove police officer who put his own life on the line to save others was honoured at a prestigious bravery awards ceremony in London yesterday (Tuesday).

PC Matt Dyson, who is based at the town's police station, received an award from the home secretary, David Blunkett, in recognition of his actions during the arrest of James Matthews in Hewell Road, Barnt Green, in April 2001.

The shocking incident, which saw Matthews take to the streets in his Saab convertible firing shots from a sawn off shot gun, left two people seriously injured.

It also caused extensive damage to shops and cars in the area.

Reception

PC Shaun Lewis, from Redditch police, assisted in the arrest of the offender and joined PC Dyson at the ceremony sponsored by The Sun newspaper, at the Dorchester Hotel.

They were joined by 61 other officers from all over the country.

The event was followed by a reception in Downing Street with Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Redditch and Bromsgrove division Ch Supt Patsy Lord said: "These nominations are yet another example of the courageous and dedicated work these officers demonstrate on a daily basis.

"PC Lewis and PC Dyson were supported by other officers and members of the support staff on the division who also received Chief Constable Certificates of Commendation.

"I am very proud of all of them.

"It was a real team effort and I'm sure the public of Barnt Green will be proud of them and their outstanding bravery and join me in commending them."
