BROMSGROVE residents are being urged to don their detective hats and join the search for Victoria the tortoise.
The elderly spur-thighed tortoise was stolen from the Blue Cross Animal Adoption Centre, in Wildmoor Lane.
The theft has been reported to the police and the Catshill charity is also asking locals to help search for the pet or contact the police with information.
"It is absolutely despicable," said Blue Cross employee Kathy Bonehill.
"What sort of horrible person steals a creature from an animal welfare charity to make money?"
The Blue Cross, which rescues and re-homes thousands of animals each year, is especially concerned about the theft of Victoria because of her age.
She was taken between Monday June 24 and Wednesday June 26.
Victoria needs a special diet and a considerable amount of careful attention, and it's unlikely the thief will realise this or know how to provide the care.
Mediterranean tortoises are on the endangered species list, meaning only government-licensed breeders and dealers can sell them.
Buying a tortoise from an unauthorised trader is illegal.
Anyone who is offered a tortoise for sale - not in a licensed pet shop - is urged to call police on 01527 584888.
