THOUSANDS of motorcyclists are set to descend on Rubery this Saturday when bikers hold a protest ride.
The event, staged to mark the 25th anniversary of the West Midlands branch of the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG), is in protest against EVSC - Electronic Vehicle Speed Control.
This system, which is currently undergoing development, uses a series of roadside beacons to remotely override and control the speed of passing vehicles.
West Midlands MAG regional representative Eddie Lowe, of King George Close, Sidemoor, said: "This proposed measure represents one of the most extreme forms of Orwellian interference yet considered by the Government. To even contemplate interference with passing traffic in this way, with no regard for the effects on the stability or safety of two wheeled road users, is ridiculous.
"Surely this is nothing but pandering to the bleeding hearts of the road safety lobby with no basis in common sense."
"We will be fighting this one all the way - legislation and technology is no substitute for driver education," the 58-year-old added.
The technology could affect all classes of vehicle - not just motorcycles.
The run leaves Lickey Road, outside the MG Rover main gates, in Longbridge, at 1pm and will travel via the Bristol Road and Broad Street, eventually ending up at Sandwell Council House, in Oldbury, where speeches will be held.
