DROITWICH Spa's carnival, which folded six years ago, looks set to return.
There are plans to form a new carnival committee, which could see the colourful event back on the town's streets by next year.
Not the Donkey Derby is one of the biggest annual events in Droitwich at the moment but there is some doubt surrounding its future. Now the town mayor is planning to set up a committee to bring the traditional carnival back to the Spa calendar.
Councillor Terry Spencer (Con - Droit Central) is currently approaching businesses, charities, clubs and schools in the hope that representatives from the organisations will come forward to sit on to the new committee.
Back in the early 1990s, the town's carnival was organised by Elvet Grosvenor and was run alongside the Donkey Derby, which was held in the Lido Park.
But because this year's Not the Donkey Derby wasn't as successful as previous years, it is uncertain whether it will be held again.
"As organisers are not sure whether the Not the Donkey Derby will go ahead next year I thought we should get the carnival up and running again," said Cllr Spencer.
"I think getting it back will really bring the people of Droitwich Spa together and with the help of businesses, groups and schools, we could really make this a success.
"I hope to get the committee sorted by next month to give us nearly a year to plan and to give townspeople time to prepare, if they want to take part in it.
"I am convinced this can be done and with the help and goodwill of the town we can really make this something for Droitwich Spa to be proud of."
Matthew Watson, of the Droitwich Spa Round Table, who organised the Donkey Derby, said: "Although the day went well, it was perhaps not as successful as previous years."
